Affordable and Healthy Eating: Tips and Ideas

It is undeniably good to eat. In fact, it is very good to eat. With the many delectable dishes we see on TV—the recipes that the Food Network chefs work on, the mouth-watering meals that are placed in restaurants and food joints, eating is such a difficult thing to refuse. However, with these dishes come great prices. Of course, if these foods are special and delectable, then it goes that they are priced higher. And this is a common issue or concern people have today.

With all prices increasing, it is not a wise thing to be spending so much on specialty food. However, it does not mean that we must sacrifice eating healthy and delicious food as there are those which are inexpensive but are still healthy. How? Here are some ways.

1. Do not ignore overripe fruits and vegetables.

Not all fruits and vegetables are sold out every day. There are times when these are ignored by shoppers and so they become overripe. Try looking for these in the local supermarket as these are sold for a much cheaper price. These can be stored in the freezer at home so that they can be used for future dishes such as muffins and soups.

2. Do your shopping later at night.

Besides the fact that the grocery store has much less people at night which spells orderliness and quietness, shopping at this time can be more advantageous as most items’ prices are dropped. For example, fresh fruit cut in chunks and slices is usually given away for about 50 percent off depending on the supermarket. Even breads are sold for a much cheaper price.

3. Beans and rice are healthy too.

Not many people like to eat rice and beans. To many, these are not a staple food. What they do not know is that both are healthy and affordable too. Mixing rice, beans, and salsa, topping this with cheese, and baking it in the oven can offer not just a healthy meal but a satisfying and filling one.

4. Enjoy soup.

Not all people include soup in their meals. But if one is low on budget, a good option is to make soup. From this, one simply has to get enough for a meal, pair this off with whole grain bread, and then store the rest in the freezer for future meals. What you got is a healthy and affordable meal.

5. Prepare your own desserts.

Desserts are a major no-no for dieters. But having some every now and then will not hurt. However, it is much better, healthier, and cheaper to make one’s own dessert at home. Not only do we know how the food has been prepared, but we can also get to choose what to put in the recipe.
